Rhode Island Reds were my very first chickens, and so, of course, they had to be Number one on the list. Australorp chickens are also one of the top layers averaging 250 light brown eggs a year. A couple additional things to look into are easter egger, buff orpingtons, cochin, leghorns, silkie, sussex, jersey giant, and barred plymouth rock.
One of the next things we asked ourselves was what is the rarest breed of chicken?
The Dong Tao or Dragon chicken may be one of the most unusual chickens you will ever see. Sultan chickens come with all the designer features: V comb, head crest, muffs, large nares, vulture hocks, dropped wings and a long tail. A couple additional items to examine: scots dumpy, breda, old english pheasant fowl, la fleche, burmese, onagadori, and brabanter.
What kind of chicken should I get?
Mostly A: You are just going to eat your chicken anyway, so Modern Farmer suggests you get a Cornish game hen. Sure, they’re small, but you can probably fit a whole one in your mouth! Mostly B: You have some kind of egg fixation. Get a Rhode Island Red or a Sussex, which are both good layers, you weird chicken-period fanatic.
What do you call a small chicken?
Normal sized chickens are called standards, but small chickens are called bantams or banty chickens. Some breeds of chickens come in both a standard size and a bantam size. An example of this is cochins. Standard cochins are huge. A cochin rooster can be around two feet tall.
