In 1904, Morel and Roger Casement (1864-1916), a British consul official stationed in the Congo, established the Congo Reform Association (CRA) to draw attention to the exploitative conditions in the colony. Due, in part, to the efforts of the CRA, Leopold relinquished control over the Congo in 1908 and it became a Belgian colony.
Why was Morel sent to Belgium?
Due to his knowledge of French, Morel was often sent to Belgium, where he was able to view the internal accounts of the Congo Free State held by Elder Dempster.
This is what we researched. the case helped encourage the foundation of the Congo Reform Association – by Roger Casement and E. D. Morel – which in its turn put pressure on the Belgian government, which helped lead to the annexation of the Congo Free State by the Belgian state in 1908.
Through Morel had been very forceful in condemning the cruel exploitation of the Congo Free State, Morel believed in a liberal imperialism, just not the cruel exploitative imperialism of the Congo Company.
When do morels appear?
Morels are a type of wild mushroom found in the spring. The Morchella genus has a wide variety of subspecies, and therefore morels can vary in size, colour and, to some extent, habitat. Typically oblong in shape, morels have a pitted exterior that looks almost like a honeycomb.
When do morels come in season?
Morels are spring mushrooms that can be found between March and June, depending on climate, weather, and elevation.
This of course begs the query “How do you know when morels are ready to eat?”
One source argued that when buying fresh morels, look for mushrooms that are plump and without dry stems. Avoid mushrooms that are dried out, brittle, bruised, or softening as these will rot more quickly. The darker the color of the morels, the nuttier and earthier the flavor will be.
