Why salmon migrate?

The main reason salmon swim upstream is to ensure the survival of their offspring. Salmon are ​anadromous​, which means they are born in fresh water, migrate to the saltwater ocean for most of their adult life and then return to fresh water to reproduce, or ​spawn​.

They then migrate to saltwater to feed, grow, and mature before returning to freshwater to spawn. Atlantic salmon are vulnerable to many stressors and threats, including blocked access to spawning grounds, habitat degradation caused by dams and culverts, and poor marine survival.

Salmon change color to attract a spawning mate. Pacific salmon use all their energy for returning to their home stream, for making eggs, and digging the nest. Most of them stop eating when they return to freshwater and have no energy left for a return trip to the ocean after spawning.

Most Pacific salmon can be seen migrating from spring though fall, depending on the species. Most adult Atlantic salmon migrate up the rivers of New England beginning in spring and continuing through the fall as well, with the migration peaking in June.

One inquiry we ran across in our research was “What do salmon do when they return to the ocean?”.

Why do salmon release so many eggs?

When they’re in the ocean, young and adult salmon eat a wide variety of prey, including: Fish such as capelin, Atlantic herring, sand lance, barracudina and lanternfish. Crustaceans such as amphipods and euphausiids or “krill.”Cephalopods like squid and octopus., and polychaete worms.

This is because they are fertilized outside of the body and are highly sensitive to temperature changes and external factors. Female salmon, for instance, will lay anywhere from 1,500 eggs to about 10,000 at one time. Among these eggs, only around 10 will successfully spawn salmon.
