Wheat can be a silent factor that seems to predispose to reflux in many patients ● Individual intolerance to certain foods may aggravate reflux, for example dairy products, and these should be avoided.
If you suffer with food intolerances, it can cause bloating, heartburn, indigestion and acid reflux. The most common food intolerances include wheat and dairy products. Because the body is unable to break down intolerant foods, the body produces more and more stomach acids that can increase the risk of acid reflux.
For most people, wheat is well tolerated and does not aggravate acid reflux. If a wheat-containing meal or snack causes symptoms, it’s helpful to understand common trigger foods to determine what food really is to blame.
In the ingredients section of the label, whole wheat flour should be first on the list. A 100% whole grain bread is a particularly healthy choice for people with acid reflux. Rather than containing only whole wheat, it can include other whole grains, so it provides a broader spectrum of nutrients.
A common question we ran across in our research was “Does wheat cause or worsen heartburn?”.
” Wheat doesn’t necessarily cause or worsen heartburn, ‘ says C. Prakash Gyawali, MD, a professor of gastroenterology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. “But it is known that celiac patients — people who are intolerant of wheat — can have heartburn. And when they stop eating gluten, their heartburn gets better,” he says.
Does gluten cause acid reflux?
I had gluten free that last two days, and have not had reflux. The necj pain has also subsided. Gluten triggers refux, acidosis and neck pain when I eat it. THe lesson – stay well, stay off gluten.
The third way gluten intolerance causes acid reflux is through systemic inflammation. Regular readers have read this description in a number of contexts: when you experience inflammation in one part of your body, your body produces pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are cell signaling proteins.
“Sometimes, those patients can have heartburn or a discomfort in the chest that they describe as heartburn,” says Dr. Gyawali. “In those patients, gluten may be one of the food triggers that can be taken away to improve their symptoms.” If you don’t have one of the above conditions, it’s more likely your heartburn is caused by acid reflux .
What foods cause acid reflux to flare up?
Food Intolerances In particular wheat and other gluten containing grains can cause acid reflux, another main cause is dairy and in particular, if someone is lactose intolerant. While food allergy testing is available, I recommend eliminating grains and dairy for a couple of weeks to see if this makes a difference to your acid reflux.
Can you be allergic to gluten but not wheat?
It’s possible to be able to tolerate gluten in other foods such as rye or barley. However, if you can’t tolerate gluten, then you probably can’t tolerate wheat. Another mix up is that a wheat allergy is Celiac Disease, or it causes Celiac Disease (CD). CD is related more to gluten intolerance, not wheat allergies.
