The main reason salmon swim upstream is to ensure the survival of their offspring. Salmon are anadromous, which means they are born in fresh water, migrate to the saltwater ocean for most of their adult life and then return to fresh water to reproduce, or spawn.
When I was writing we ran into the query “How and why do salmon migrate?”.
The how and why of salmon migration. In recent years, studies have shown that in the open ocean environment, salmon use the magnetic field of the Earth to guide their migration. This helps them move from the coastal areas near their spawning grounds to rich feeding areas, and then back again toward the end of their lives.
This of course begs the query “When can salmon be seen migrating to their spawning area?”
This is what I discovered. most Pacific salmon can be seen migrating from spring though fall, depending on the species. Most adult Atlantic salmon migrate up the rivers of New England beginning in spring and continuing through the fall as well, with the migration peaking in June.
Why do salmon release so many eggs?
When they’re in the ocean, young and adult salmon eat a wide variety of prey, including: Fish such as capelin, Atlantic herring, sand lance, barracudina and lanternfish. Crustaceans such as amphipods and euphausiids or “krill.”Cephalopods like squid and octopus., and polychaete worms.
This is because they are fertilized outside of the body and are highly sensitive to temperature changes and external factors. Female salmon, for instance, will lay anywhere from 1,500 eggs to about 10,000 at one time. Among these eggs, only around 10 will successfully spawn salmon.

How do salmon sharks grow and reproduce?
Growth and Reproduction. After spending the summer in the northern part of their range, the salmon shark migrates south to breed. In the western North Pacific they migrate to Japanese waters whereas in the eastern North Pacific, the salmon shark breeds off the coast of Oregon and California. Males mature at 5 years of age and females at 8-10 years.
