Can salmon recall?

This weekend, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration has announced the recall of smoked salmon—the kind often ordered on bagels with cream cheese, or placed on charcuterie boards. Specifically, the recall is for Wild Cold Smoked Keta Salmon Lox that was sold under the following brand labels: Tony’s, Aqua Nova, and North Coast.

This begs the inquiry “Do salmon eat while swimming upstream?”

The answer is that during their way up the rivers, salmon reduce their feeding activity to a bare minimum and instead focus all of their attention on reaching those spawning grounds. If they eat while swimming upstream, it will only be sporadically and during very short periods.
